Copycat Alice Springs Chicken with Low Carb Honey Mustard
One of my favorite dishes at Outback Steakhouse, the Alice Springs Chicken can be easily turned into a great keto dish as long as the honey mustard is modified.

Recipe Explained
According to Outback’s website, Alice Springs Chicken is “wood-fire grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, crisp bacon, melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar and honey mustard sauce.” I don’t want to get in the business of exclusively making copy-cat recipes, but this was just too good to pass up.
Overall, the recipe is pretty straight forward. Here we’re going to be cooking the chicken in a pan and in the oven instead of grilling it, but you can do this on the grill as well.
The Honey Mustard
The only non-keto part of this meal is the honey mustard. If you’ve ever had Alice Springs chicken at Outback before, you’ll know there’s something unique about the sauce used there. After some testing, I personally think that this honey mustard is as close as you can get it while avoiding the sugary honey that’s traditionally involved. We’re opting for stevia to give it it’s sweet taste instead. This low-carb honey mustard will go great with any grilled or baked chicken dishes you might have. I recommend serving this meal with a side of roasted asparagus as the honey mustard will go well with that too.

Alice Springs Chicken
- 4 Chicken Breasts
- 2 cups Mushrooms
- 4 slices Bacon cooked
- 3/4 cup Monterrey Jack cheese shredded
- 3/4 cup Cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 1 tablespoon Olive oil
Instructions
Honey Mustard
-
Combine all ingredients in a bowl, whisk together until combined. Yields about 3/4 cup honey mustard.
-
Place 1/2 cup of the honey mustard in a ziploc bag with the chicken breasts and allow to marinate for 2 hours.
Alice Springs Chicken
-
Preheat oven to 400°F.
-
Saute mushrooms in 2 tbsp butter until brown 8-12 minutes. Set aside.
-
In a large pan, sear the chicken in olive oil on medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes each side, or until golden brown. Here we're just looking for a sear and aren't cooking it through.
-
Transfer seared chicken into an oven safe casserole dish. Top chicken breasts with 1 slice of bacon (halved), mushrooms, and cheese. If you don't want to use the honey mustard as a dipping sauce, use a brush or spoon and top the chicken with a layer underneath the bacon.
-
Place the chicken in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F.
-
Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
